Self-Test

 

As you study the Tiv Language as you go through this program, you would need to constantly test yourself.  Practice questions and tests are provided throughout as well as from sources such as Word Mint and with its great quizzes, puzzles, and wordsearch capabilities. Listen to the videos in speeches or conversations or songs, and see if you can pick out any Tiv words that you have learned and their meanings.

Exercse1

 

These practice exercises show how vowels and vowel sounds are used in phrases for conversation. Use the words in the vocabulary list to construct short sentences in Tiv. You may consult a Tiv language dictionary or other sources to translate the sentences in #2 below into English.

  1. Vocabulary: ya (eat), bee (finish(ed)), ya (home), ma, za, ka, nan, vange, vaa, wan, kaa, daa, baba, Adamu, Adagi, Jigawa, Jighjigh, jime, zor, tor (mortar), kuma (enough), kumam (I’m satisfied), guma (laterite), de, yem, makeranta, ga, kwagh, ôr, or, inya, ishange (grain).
  2. Sentences:

  4. Za makeranta.
  5. Ortwer na un ichigh.

Exercise 2

These practice exercises show how the article, constant symbols, and sounds are used in phrases for conversation in Tiv. Use the words in the vocabulary list or consult a Tiv language dictionary to translate the sentences into English.

Examine the adjectives in the above examples and from dictionaries to complete the following activities.
